Native Forward Scholars Fund LogoOn April 11–12, 2025, Michigan State University welcomed educators, Tribal leaders, students, and community members to campus for the Michigan Area Tribal & Institutional Partner Convening, co-hosted by the Native Forward Scholars Fund and the MSU Native American Institute. This free, two-day gathering was a powerful testament to the collective commitment to supporting Native students in higher education.

Day One Highlights – April 11

The convening opened with a warm welcome from Dr. Kevin Leonard, director of the Native American Institute, followed by an elder prayer and attendee introductions. The morning sessions featured presentations from Native Forward staff—Christa Moya, Sara Barnett, and Kakiley Workman—who shared insights into scholarship operations and student programming.

Leonard also presented on MSU’s Native American Institute, emphasizing the university’s dedication to Indigenous student support and community engagement.

A series of impactful presentations followed from tribal and institutional partners, including representatives from:

  • MiLEAP
  • MSU College of Human Medicine
  • MSU Admissions
  • MSU American Indian and Indigenous Studies
  • MSU Indigenous Law and Policy Center
  • Grand Valley State University
  • Ferris State University
  • Central Michigan University
  • University of Michigan
  • Clean Water Action

These sessions showcased best practices, student support initiatives, and collaborative strategies to enhance Native student success.

The afternoon featured a networking lunch, open discussion, and a scholarship workshop designed for students and led by Native Forward. Attendees then enjoyed a guided bus tour of MSU’s campus, bookstore, and dairy store, followed by the Roots & Recipes Dinner hosted by the North American Indigenous Student Organization—a cultural celebration of food, community, and storytelling.

Day Two Highlights – April 12

Saturday’s programming centered around service and reflection. Participants gathered at the Nokomis Cultural Heritage Center for a local service project, followed by a group discussion over lunch. This hands-on experience deepened connections and reinforced the importance of community-based engagement.

A Gathering of Purpose

Throughout the convening, attendees engaged in meaningful dialogue, shared resources, and built lasting relationships. The event’s objectives—raising awareness, sharing best practices, networking, and identifying challenges—were met with enthusiasm and collaboration.

With over 22,000 Native scholars supported over its 55-year history, Native Forward continues to be a driving force in empowering Indigenous students. This convening reaffirmed that progress in Native education is rooted in partnership, cultural respect, and shared vision.
