Michigan State University is proud to provide a unique opportunity for Native high school students (Grades 9–12) from across the United States and Canada to engage in an immersive STEAM experience as part of the annual MSU Science Festival. In collaboration with the Native American Institute, Native Americans in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (NSTEAM) is designed to inspire and connect Indigenous youth with the exciting world of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

Participants had the opportunity to explore MSU’s vibrant campus and engage directly with faculty and staff working in STEAM-related fields. A highlight of the experience includes meeting Indigenous scientists who are leading innovative research and culturally grounded programs that blend traditional knowledge with modern scientific practices.
Students enjoyed guided tours of key MSU landmarks, including the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), the MSU Planetarium, and the beloved MSU Dairy Store. NSTEAM offers a hands-on look at cutting-edge science and campus life, while fostering a sense of community and belonging.
This initiative reflects MSU’s commitment to inclusive education and the celebration of Indigenous perspectives in STEAM disciplines. It’s more than a campus visit—it’s a journey of discovery, connection, and inspiration.
NSTEAM 2026 will be April 10-11. Watch for registration information in the coming weeks.
